The Transportation Alternatives Incentives Program (TAIP) leverages Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funds to implement a comprehensive statewide initiative that enhances bicycle safety, traffic education, and school safety. This program aligns with federal and state transportation goals by promoting sustainable and safer transportation alternatives.
Program Objectives
The program aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Bicycle Safety: Promote the use of helmets, proper signaling, and adherence to traffic laws among cyclists.
- Traffic Education: Increase awareness of pedestrian and cyclist rights and responsibilities through targeted campaigns.
- School Safety: Collaborate with schools to ensure safe travel routes, conduct safety workshops, and establish visible enforcement efforts near educational institutions.
Eligible Activities
TAIP funding supports activities such as:
- Organizing bike rodeos to teach safe cycling practices.
- Implementing school crossing safety initiatives to protect students.
- Purchasing and distributing bicycle safety devices, such as helmets and reflective gear.
- Conducting educational workshops and traffic safety training.
- Establishing or enhancing Safe Routes to School programs.
- Funding enforcement efforts in school zones and high-risk pedestrian areas.
Program Requirements
To qualify for TAIP funding, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Activities must directly address bicycle safety, traffic education, or school safety objectives.
- Applications can be submitted by schools, municipalities, nonprofit organizations, or other eligible entities. However, all applications must be approved by and signed by the local school board to ensure alignment with local safety and education priorities.
- Applications should include a detailed plan with specific goals, timelines, and measurable outcomes.
- All proposals must comply with federal and state safety and environmental standards.
- Approved items and services will be procured and provided directly to applicants using program funds. No funding match is required.
Funding Details
The TAIP will use program funds to directly purchase approved items and services on behalf of applicants. This approach ensures efficient use of resources while alleviating the need for applicants to provide matching funds. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis.
