Keeping up with maintenance

WYDOT’s mission includes the safe and efficient operation of 6,800 miles of roadway on the state highway system, and much of responsibility lies with department maintenance forces.

Maintenance efforts can be divided into two broad categories, by season: winter and summer. Winter maintenance is primarily concerned with keeping roads safe and passable by controlling snow and ice. Summer maintenance centers on repair of the actual road surface and accompanying features, such as guardrail, delineators, lane markings, signs and lights.

The increasing age of state’s highways, couple with steadily increasing traffic, has lead to an ever greater emphasis on effective maintenance strategies.

WYDOT maintenance crews include more than 400 personnel operating out of 56 locations.
