I’ve held a CDL before but I don’t currently have one… How do I get it back?
Drivers issued a Class A CDL, Class B CDL, or a Passenger (P), School Bus (S), or Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement and individuals who obtain a CLP before February 7, 2022, are not required to comply with the requirements of ELDT. A CLP holder with a CLP issued prior to February 7, 2022 must complete the required skills tests to obtain their CDL before their CLP expires or they will need to do the knowledge tests again for a new CLP and comply with the ELDT requirements.
If you have previously held a CDL and any applicable endorsements, you may be grandfathered from the requirements of ELDT (effective February 7, 2022). However, you may be required to perform the written tests, obtain a CLP, and pass a skills test in a representative vehicle to get your CDL back. You will be required to provide documentation to the department that you have previously held a CDL in this or any other state in order to obtain this status.
Acceptable forms of proof of prior out of state CDL and endorsements may include:
- Physical credential showing prior Class A or B CDL;
- Driving record from the prior state of licensing showing the prior Class A or B CDL;
- Letter from the the prior state showing the prior Class A or B CDL
Applicants who have previously held a CDL in Wyoming will be verified by Driver Services.
How do I request “grandfather” status from the ELDT Requirements?
Once you have obtained your CLP, email your request to cdl@wyo.gov, and a representative will be in contact with you to confirm your status. Please allow 7-10 business days to process your request.
