CDL Class Information

 

Consists of any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of twenty-six thousand one (26,001) pounds or more, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle or vehicles being towed is in excess of ten thousand (10,000) pounds, including all vehicles under classes "B" or "C", except motorcycles.

Consists of any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of twenty-six thousand one (26,001) or more pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle which does not have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) in excess of ten thousand (10,000) pounds, including all vehicles under class "C", except motorcycles.

Consists of any single vehicle or combination of vehicles that does not meet the definition of a class "A" or class "B" vehicle as contained herein, but that either is designed to transport sixteen (16) or more passengers including the driver or is placarded for transportation of hazardous materials.

 

A permit issued to an individual which, when carried with a valid driver's license issued in accordance with this act, authorizes an individual to operate a commercial motor vehicle when accompanied by a passenger holding a valid commercial driver's license for the class and type of vehicle being driven.

 

"Endorsement" means an authorization placed upon an individual's driver's license to permit the individual to operate certain types of motor vehicles.

 

“T” Endorsement: authorizes a class "A" vehicle to be operated while pulling more than one (1) trailer.

 

“P” Endorsement: authorizes the driver to operate a bus or any motor vehicle as defined in W.S. 31-7-102(a)(iii) used for the transportation of passengers, providing the licensed driver has attained the age of eighteen (18) years.

 

“N” Endorsement: authorizes the operation of a “Tank Vehicle,” as defined by W.S. 31-7-102(a)(xlv) below:

 

"Tank vehicle"  means any commercial motor vehicle that is designed to transport any liquid or gaseous materials within a tank or tanks having an individual rated capacity of more than one hundred nineteen (119) gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of one thousand (1,000) gallons or more which are either permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or the chassis. A commercial motor vehicle transporting an empty storage container tank, not designed for transportation, with a rated capacity of one thousand (1,000) gallons or more that is temporarily attached to a flatbed trailer is not considered a tank vehicle.

 

“H” Endorsement: authorizes the operation of a vehicle transporting hazardous materials.  Note: All applicants for a hazmat endorsement must complete and pass the Federal Hazardous Materials Security Threat Assessment and be fingerprinted.

 

“X” Endorsement: represents a combination of "H" and "N" endorsements.

 

“S” Endorsement: authorizes the driver to operate a bus or any motor vehicle as defined in W.S. 31-7-102(a)(iii) used for the transportation of preschool, elementary or secondary school students from home to school, school to home or to and from school sponsored events.

 

You will have to take one or more knowledge tests, depending on what class of license and what endorsements you need.

 

 

 

 

* The Commercial Learners Permit will be added as a class of license.  You will be required to complete the general knowledge test and any other test applicable to the class of license you are ultimately trying to obtain.  The CLP must be carried with the driver license to be valid.

 

** The hazardous materials test is required if you want to haul hazardous materials as defined in 49 CFR 383.5. In order to obtain this endorsement you are also required to pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check.  Federal hazardous materials assessment information is available at  HAZMAT Endorsement Threat Assessment Program or by calling 877-429-7746.  

 

*** The tanker test is required if you want to haul a liquid or liquid gas in a permanently mounted cargo tank rated at 119 gallons or more or a portable tank rated at 1,000 gallons or more.
