Public Reports
The Highway Safety Program provides a standard crash counts report which can be customized to focus on one (1) of three (3) levels of geographic area (statewide, county, or highway district) and further refined to one (1) of eight (8) current topics of interest. Current topics of interest include:
- Total Crash Counts - Provides a count of all crashes occurring within the selected geographic area.
- Alcohol or Drug Involved - Provides a count of only those crashes in which alcohol or drugs were indicated as a potential factor in the crash.
- Speed Related - Provides a count of only those crashes in which at least one of the vehicles involved in the crash's speed was indicated as a potential factor in the crash.
- Distracted Driving - Provides a count of only those crashes in which at least one of the drivers involved in the crash was suspected of being distracted in any way (for example a phone, passenger, or outside occurrence) and this distraction may have been a potential factor in the crash.
- Commercial Motor Vehicle Involved - Provides a count of only those crashes in which at least one vehicle involved in the crash was identified as a vehicle used for commercial purposes. A commercial motor vehicle (CMV) is any motor vehicle used for the transportation of goods, property or people in interstate or intrastate commerce.
- Wild Animal Involved - Provides a count of only those crashes in which at least one of the vehicles involved stuck a wild animal.
- Pedestrian Involved - Provides a count of only those crashes in which at least one of the vehicles involved stuck a pedestrian. A pedestrian may be using other means of non-motorized conveyance such as roller skates, wheelchair, or stroller.
- Occupant Seat Belt Usage - Provides a count of only those vehicle occupants in safety-equipped vehicles involved in a crash and how those occupants utilized the safety belts available. Types of safety belt usage include properly used, misused, not used, and unknown. Safety equipment utilized includes safety belts, car seats, and booster seats.
The standard crash counts report provides yearly totals for the past five (5) years of vetted crash data for the following count areas:
- Fatal Crashes - Traffic crashes involving one or more persons who sustained an injury resulting in death.
- Fatalities - Involved persons who sustained an injury that resulted in death within a 30 day period after the crash occurred.
- Injury Crashes - Traffic crashes involving one or more persons who were injured but there were no fatalities.
- Injuries - Involved persons who sustained an injury but did not die as a result of the injury.
- Property Damage Only (PDO) Crashes - Traffic crashes involving property damage of $1000 or more with no injuries or fatalities.
- Total Crashes - A count of all crashes occurring within the year.
- Critical Crashes - All fatal injury and suspected serious injury crashes. A fatal injury is any injury that results in death within a 30 day period after the crash occurred. A suspected serious injury is any injury, other than a fatal injury, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or normally continuing the activities the person was capable of performing before the injury occurred.
- Serious Crashes - All suspected minor injury and possible injury crashes. A suspected minor injury is any injury, other than a fatal or serious injury, which is evident to observers at the scene of the crash in which the injury occurred (bruises, cuts, etc.). A possible injury is a complaint of pain without visible injury.
- Damage Crashes - All no apparent injury and unknown injury crashes. No apparent injury occurs when there is no physical evidence of injury and the person does not report any changes in normal function. Unknown injury occurs when the injury status of an involved person is not known.
